Mount Meru Trekking
Mount Meru Climbing
Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566 meters, is a stunning, lesser-known trekking destination located within Arusha National Park. Often considered a warm-up for Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a challenging and scenic trek through diverse ecosystems, including lush montane forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. The mountain is an active stratovolcano with a dramatic crater and steep ridges, providing breathtaking views and rich biodiversity.
The 3–4-day trek begins at Momella Gate and follows the Momella Route. Along the way, trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffalos, monkeys, and over 400 bird species. The trail is accompanied by armed rangers for safety due to the presence of wildlife. Huts provide accommodation at designated campsites, such as Miriakamba and Saddle Huts.
As you ascend, the scenery shifts dramatically, culminating in a thrilling pre-dawn summit attempt to Socialist Peak. From the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ash Cone, and the surrounding plains.
Mount Meru is perfect for acclimatization, nature lovers, and those seeking a less crowded but equally rewarding trekking experience.
