Ol doinyo Lengai Mountain and Trekking

Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active volcano located in northern Tanzania, near Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley. Rising to 2,962 meters (9,718 feet), it is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava—a unique, low-temperature lava that appears black in daylight and flows like oil.

This sacred mountain is deeply revered by the Maasai people and attracts adventurous trekkers from around the globe. The trek to Ol Doinyo Lengai’s summit is physically demanding due to its steep, loose ash slopes and high elevation gain over a relatively short distance. Climbers typically begin the ascent around midnight to reach the summit by sunrise. At the top, you’re rewarded with dramatic views of the surrounding Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and on clear days, even Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

Though challenging, the trek offers a unique combination of geological wonder, cultural significance, and raw natural beauty. It’s a true off-the-beaten-path adventure for those seeking an intense and unforgettable mountain experience in Tanzania.
