Nasera Rock & the Wildebeest Migration

Nasera Rock & the Wildebeest Migration

Nasera Rock is a towering monolith located in the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, near the Gol Mountains. Rising dramatically from the grassy plains, this granite inselberg reaches over 50 meters high and holds both ecological and cultural significance. It’s a prominent landmark in the remote Loliondo region and is believed to have been used as a shelter by ancient hunter-gatherer communities. Archaeological findings suggest it was once a habitation site dating back thousands of years.

Beyond its geological and historical intrigue, Nasera Rock lies along one of the lesser-known but vital corridors of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Between December and March, during the calving season, vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move through the short-grass plains surrounding Nasera in search of fresh grazing. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are never far behind, creating prime opportunities for wildlife viewing.

The area’s remoteness means fewer crowds, offering a raw, immersive experience of both the Great Migration and Tanzania’s ancient landscapes. Nasera Rock is a hidden gem in the migration journey.
