Tarangire National Park

Overview

Tarangire National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is renowned for its vast landscapes, rich wildlife, and large elephant populations. Covering 2,850 square kilometers, the park is dominated by savannah, acacia woodlands, and the seasonal Tarangire River, which attracts a diverse range of wildlife, especially during the dry season. Visitors can spot elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes, as well as over 550 bird species. Tarangire is also famous for its ancient baobab trees, which provide a stunning backdrop for safaris.

Game drives are the primary way to explore the park, offering opportunities for big cat sightings, including leopards and cheetahs. The wet season (November to May) brings lush greenery and migratory animals, while the dry season (June to October) sees the park’s wildlife concentrated around water sources, providing exceptional viewing opportunities. Tarangire is a peaceful and less-crowded alternative to other parks, offering a more intimate safari experience.

Game drives

The most popular way to explore Tarangire, game drives allow visitors to traverse the park’s vast plains and woodlands in search of wildlife. The Park is known for its large herds of elephants, and game drives often include sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes, with opportunities to spot cheetahs and leopards.

The dry season offers excellent wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around the Tarangire River and remaining waterholes.

A rare and exciting option, night game drives offer a chance to witness nocturnal creatures like hyenas, civets, genets, and even leopards. These drives are guided by rangers with powerful spotlights, providing an entirely different view of the park’s wildlife.

Accompanied by expert guides, walking safaris offer a chance to connect with nature in a more intimate way, focusing on animal tracks, plant life, and the smaller details of the ecosystem.

For a truly unique experience, balloon safaris over Tarangire provide breathtaking aerial views of the park’s diverse landscapes, including its iconic baobab trees and wildlife below, while drifting with the wind during sunrise.
